The main research line of the Environmental factors in degenerative diseases research group of the San Carlos Clinical Hospital Institute of Health Research (IdISSC) is the study of the implication of environmental factors in the etiopathogenesis of multiple sclerosis and its possible utility as biomarkers in the prognosis of the disease and in the response to treatment, as well as the study of the mechanisms involved in the interaction between these environmental factors and the multiple sclerosis susceptibility genetic factors. We are also interested in the identification of other biomarkers (microRNAs –human and viral-, cytokines, metabolomic, …) in serum and CSF that could be related to the progression of the disease, activity (relapses) and response to treatment and also to the neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation processes in multiple sclerosis.
